On the Cutting Edges of Jewish Education

..........
By Joseph Reimer, Dept. of Jewish Studies, McGill University

During this past decade North American scholars in the field of Jewish Education have moved away from an earlier focus on curriculum and the classroom and twoards the broader conditions that are associated with "success in Jewish education." This move has been deeply influenced by demographic studies and particularly the 1990 National Jewish Population Study.

In this paper I will focus on a number of such studies dealing with the North American synagogue as an educational setting. I will suggest how educational thinking about the sysnagogue has changed over the past decade and offer a critical appraisal of these new trends in Jewish educational scholarship. This will include a critical self-appraisal of my own work in this area.
