Gender and Jewish Studies: Reshaping a Field

..........
By Paula E. Hyman, Yale University

Thirty years ago, as the field of Jewish Studies entered the North American Academy, there were few women to be found among its faculty members and no attention paid to women's historical experience or to issues of gender in Jewish culture. The field of Jewish studies, which has flourished in the past three decades, has been transformed by the conincident development of women's and gender studies. This lecture will analyze the impact of gender-sensitive scholarship on our understanding of Jewish history and culture, as well as the pockets of resistance to this relatively new perspective.
